80th annual livestock show in the books

The 80th Annual Big Bend Livestock Association Show is a wrap, with over $300,000 in sales of market animals. The weekend started with the weigh-in on Thursday evening, and pit masters Calan Ahrens and Stephen Wood were hard at work on brisket, cabrito, and other mouth-watering food for the weekend concessions.

Elidia Gallego Leyva, 89, of Alpine, Texas passed away December 18, 2023 at her residence. Elidia was born on July 19, 1934 to Ben and Amelia Gallego in Alpine, Texas. She attended Centennial School. She was married to Abelardo Leyva and was mother to Abelardo “Ito” Leyva, Jr. and Orlando Leyva.

Elidia was an avid baseball fan and attended the Alpine Cowboys games. She loved to cook and entertain. She was an Alpine Bucks fan and loved her scratch-offs.

After the iconic La Kiva Restaurant and Bar’s closure during COVID, the community felt its absence. It was a piece missing from the close-knit landscape, one that is uniquely Terlingua. A new chapter has begun for the location, however, ushered in by the dedicated new owners, Andy, and Mallory Mundy.
