Alpine Ambassadors will sponsor ribbon cuttings on April 28 at 5:30 p.m. at West Texas Italian Delicacies, 801 East Holland Avenue; Alpine Wine, 116 North Fifth Street, and Alpine Bed and Breakfast at 5:30 p.m. on May 6, both at Alpine Wine; and The Truck at 5:30 p.m. on May 7 at the corner of Holland and Fifth streets.

Boquillas to begin summer schedule

The Boquillas Port of Entry within Big Bend National Park, providing access to the town of Boquillas, Mexico, will change to the summer schedule beginning Sunday, May 1. The port will be open Friday through Monday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

Dear Neil: We live on a city street where the lots are 60 feet wide. Our neighbors planted a hedge of bamboo approximately 70 feet long beside our sixfoot wooden fence. That puts the bamboo eight feet from the side wall of our house, and two feet from the heating/cooling units. The neighbor says it’s a clumping type, not the invasive type of bamboo, but it already seems to be heading our way. What can we do?

Many times, when I prepare a new dish, the ingredients or even the finished product will give me ideas about how I can use the techniques or ingredients in an entirely new dish. Sometimes the dish is something I just concoct out of thin air, and other times I add to a dish already established. Such a thing recently occurred when I was making a recipe for stuffed crescent rolls.

Big Bend Regional Medical center recruits staff, resumes surgeries

With the addition of nine nurses and clinical team members, Big Bend Regional Medical Center, the Tri-County’s hospital in Alpine, reopened its medical and surgical patient unit. The unit was co-located near emergency services to allow full medical and surgical service staffing coverage.

Observatory holds Dark Sky Festival

The University of Texas at Austin’s McDonald Observatory will hold its first Dark Skies Festival Friday and Saturday, April 29-30. The festival will include daytime and evening events for the whole family, plus the debut of the new “Preserving Dark Skies” exhibit in the Frank N. Bash Visitor Center. Both the exhibit and the festival are funded by Apache Corporation.

Early voting for May 7 elections continues

City, AISD, and propositions all on separate ballots Early voting for the City of Alpine and Alpine ISD Board of Trustees continues through Tuesday, and voters will also have to make choices on two proposed Texas constitutional amendments. For the city, school teacher Catherine Eaves and Alpine businessman Amit Rangra are facing off for the mayoral seat.

The Alpine High School girls varsity track and field team won the Area competition at Denver City on April 21, and they will continue on to Regionals in Abilene on Friday and Saturday, April 29-30. Here the girls show off their championship plaque.
