University foundation has new board

Continuing a saga that started in late March, Sul Ross State University Foundation board members recently resigned, and were quickly replaced. University President Pete Gallego’s Chief of Staff Mike Pacheco told the Avalanche the foundation would carry on as it had, but with a new board of directors.

Council cans Zimmer and Salas

Fireworks came early this year at Alpine’s May 18 city council meeting, and freshman council member Judy Stokes lit the fuse. By the end of the evening, City Manager Erik Zimmer and City Secretary Cynthia Salas had been terminated, and City Attorney Sandy Wilson had resigned.

Everyone knows that baseball is more than just a sport. It’s America’s national pastime, from little ones learning the basics in Little League, to teens playing for school pride, to adults who just want to celebrate the love of the game.

Tennis teams headed for Regionals

Alpine’s boys and girls high school tennis teams are both champions after the District 4-3AAA tennis tournament on April 14 at Fort Stockton. First place individual awards were in order for the mixed doubles team of Derek Schwierjohn and Itzel Franco.

City discusses illegal gambling

Dark skies were once again in the forefront at the City of Alpine council meeting on April 20. City Manager Erik Zimmer referred to House Bill 4305 and Senate Bill 2133, proposed legislation that would allow the use of hotel/motel occupancy tax funds to help support dark sky initiatives.

Some trails at park to reopen this week

With increased success in fire containment and no growth in fire acreage, firefighters at Big Bend National Park have changed the focus from fire suppression to rehabilitation of damaged areas. Where the fire burned hot and any control lines were created, the ground can become channels for erosion if left unrepaired when summer monsoons come.

Disaster recovery virtual seminar coming up

The Far West Texas Disaster Recovery Virtual Seminar will take place on Wednesday, April 28, from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. This seminar is unique in that six county extension agents in West Texas have come together to put this program on for ranchers, farmers, and stakeholders within the agriculture industry in West Texas.
