Taxpayers protest over $100 million in assessments

At the Brewster County Commissioners Court meeting on June 23, County Judge Eleazar Cano announced that many taxpayers filed protests after appraisal notices were sent out recently. Cano said he, Treasurer Julie Morton, and Auditor Patty Roach met with county Appraisal District Chief Appraiser Denise Flores and Tax Assessor-Collector Sylvia Vega.

Trustees discuss STAAR test results

STAAR test results headlined the Alpine ISD Board of Trustees regular meeting on June 29. The annual assessment includes testing for third through eighth grade students in reading and math, fourth and seventh grade writing, fifth and eighth grade science, eighth grade social studies, and high school end-of-course assessments for English I, English II, algebra I, biology, and U.S.

Radio field day coming up

Amateur radio operators from Brewster, Jeff Davis, Presidio, and Pecos counties will be participating in a national radio exercise Saturday and Sunday, June 26-27. Big Bend Amateur Radio Club will be making round-the-clock contacts with clubs all over the country in an operation called field day.
