The Alpine A’s, an adult baseball team, is seeking experienced players who are at least 28 years old for the new season that starts in late April and runs into August. Home games are held at Historic Kokernot Stadium in Alpine, and will be played at 11 a.m.

Sul Ross State University softball’s Payslee Sims was named American Southwest Conference Tri-Hitter of the Week after a sweep of Howard Payne. “Payslee has been hitting the ball well all season,” said head Coach Troy Canaba.

Off-duty Border Patrol agents and Mission Support Specialists from the Big Bend Sector responded to a house fire, and rescued a family. On April 9 at around 5 a.m., two employees from Big Bend Sector who are also residents of Marfa witnessed a house ablaze, and rushed to render aid.

The University of Texas at Austin’s McDonald Observatory, the Nature Conservancy/Davis Mountain Preserve, and the International Dark-Sky Association recently announced the certification of the Greater Big Bend International Dark Sky Reserve. The designation, granted by the International Dark-Sky Association, recognizes the commitment of organizations, governments, businesses, and citizens in the region to maintain dark skies. Protecting this resource benefits not only astronomical research, but also wildlife, ecology and tourism.

The Mule Deer Foundation will hold its spring event on Thursday, April 28, from 6-8 p.m. at Spicewood Restaurant in Alpine. Come out and support mule deer conservation and have a chance to win some great prizes. Gun of the Year drawing and other raffles will be held for Mule Deer Foundation merchandise, guns, coolers, knives, and camping gear. Need not be present to win.

Lydia Torres, Pamela Torres, Kristen Hardwick, and Julie Morton held a benefit bake sale on April 2 outside Porter’s Thriftway grocery store in Alpine to raise funds for medical expenses for family member and Alpine native James Torres, who is currently hospitalized in Odessa. Breakfast burritos, brisket burritos, candy apples, popcorn balls, and cakes were sold to assist Torres. The successful fundraiser netted $1,500 for Torres towards medical expenses.
