Big Bend Sector receives new chief

According to a press release issued by U.S. Customs and Border Protection and Chief of the U.S. Border Patrol Jason Owens, the Big Bend Sector of the U. S. Border Patrol (USBP) announced that a new Senior Executive was recently selected. Walter N. Slosar was selected for the Sector Chief Patrol Agent position and assumed his new duties last week at Sector headquarters in Marfa. Chief Slosar was notified of his selection earlier last month via an internal email.

Alpine ISD receives $1M grant

The Alpine Independent School District was recently awarded a $1M grant focused on fostering student wellness and belonging. Alpine ISD was one of 90 school districts from across Texas selected for the two-year Stronger Connections Grant from the Texas Education Agency through a competitive application process.

Sul Ross hosts Big Bend FFA leadership contest

The Big Bend District FFA Leadership Contest was held Monday, November 13 at the Sul Ross Range Animal Science Center. The contest included FFA chapters competing from Alpine, Buena Vista, Crane, Fort Davis, Fort Stockton, Iraan, Pecos, and Wink.

Blue Santa toy drive is off and running

The annual Blue Santa toy drive, sponsored by the Alpine Police Department is off to a great start this season thanks to the generosity of the American Legion Big Bend Post #79. The Legion presented a check to APD Chief Darrell Losoya to purchase gifts. Those wishing to donate or drop off gifts for Alpine kids in need at Christmastime may go by the station or call 432-837-3486. The Alpine Police Department appreciates your support.

at 1 p.m. on Saturday and continues until 4:30 p.m. There is a $25 charge for the home tour with proceeds benefiting this event for next year. At 5:30 p.m. the annual Christmas Stroll up Sul Ross Ave will begin with music from student bands and will conclude at the Vaquero House at 208 N. BRI students awarded scholarships

The Borderlands Research Institute (BRI) at Sul Ross State University recently announced that 17 of their students have been selected to receive a total of $122,750 in scholarships from 11 different sources, nine of those included were the result of a special fundraising effort celebrating BRI’s 15th anniversary. The Permian Basin Area Foundation, one of the largest contributors to scholarships in the area, donated a $15,000 challenge grant to help fuel the fundraising effort for those nine scholarships.
