When does summer begin? Sul Ross State University students have been enjoying summer break for nearly three weeks, and local public school students have just gotten their own taste of freedom. Given that summery temperatures can occur nearly year-round in Texas, most might agree that usually, the real question is whether summer ever ends.

Cowboys stampede over Pecos Bills in season opener

Under the lights of the outstanding newly constructed Cyclone Ballparks in Pecos, the Alpine Cowboys kicked off their 2024 Pecos League season with a resounding 21-0 victory over the newly established home team Pecos Bills. The game, played on a dusty and windy Tuesday evening, showcased the Cowboys’ offensive firepower and a stellar pitching performance by rookie Dieterich Guertzgen.

Alpine ISD to host youth football camp

The Alpine ISD youth football camp for both boys and girls in incoming grades first through sixth will be held on Wednesday, June 12. Registration begins at 12:30 p.m. that same day and the camp will run from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

AHS says farewell to beloved coach

Alpine Sports Summer Training Schedule After 54 years of teaching and coaching, with a career marked by tremendous impact and appreciation from his students, Coach Wayne Schroeder will be retiring. To mark this departure, Schroeder was recently honored at the annual sports banquet for the AISD 2023-2024 athletes.

TFEMS kicks off first annual fire academy

The Big Bend Regional Fire Academy hosted by Terlingua Fire and EMS (TFEMS) held its first skills weekend this past Saturday and Sunday as part of a six-month academy. Seventeen fire cadets from across the region received instruction and hands-on experience on several skills pertinent to their training.

Smoke is on the horizon

The Smoke in the Mountains BBQ & Ribeye Shootout is less than a month away, and the board of the organization has been busy making plans since last year. The 2023 event was very successful, raising $50,000 for local fire departments. This event is held in loving memory of Sara Adams and Robert Rubio.
