TPWD forecasts strong mourning and white-winged dove populations

Dove season officially began on September 1. Thanks to a rainy spring and an early summer, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) biologists predict record-high populations of mourning and white-winged doves this season. Those early conditions led to a good nesting season throughout most of the state, and hunters could encounter increased populations in the field.

38th Annual Trappings of Texas gets underway

The 38th Annual Trappings of Texas exhibit and sale will begin tonight at the Museum of the Big Bend on the Sul Ross campus. This long-standing exhibit and sale of one of the nation’s foremost collections of contemporary Western art and cowboy gear begins its opening weekend with a slate of events that continues through Saturday evening, September 14.

Tourism in Big Bend contributes millions to local economy

A new National Park Service (NPS) report shows that in 2023, 509,000 park visitors spent an estimated $48.7 million in local gateway regions while visiting Big Bend National Park and Rio Grande Wild & Scenic River. These expenditures supported a total of 661 jobs, $18.8 million in labor income, $29.8 million in value-added, and $56.4 million in economic output in local gateway economies surrounding Big Bend National Park.
Hiking is a big part of visiting Big Bend National Park. Due to the desert climate, hikers must prepare by carrying plenty of water and wearing comfortable, sturdy shoes.
