Spring winds bring the return of porch suppers

With spring winds blowing in from the south and west, it’s time once again to start thinking about cooking outside here in Far West Texas. This is the season when the fire gets lit, the dust kicks up a little, and meals move outdoors where they belong.

Runoff election on the horizon

The 2026 primary runoff election is just weeks away, with early voting scheduled for May 18-22, and election day scheduled for Tuesday, May 26. Polls in Brewster County will be open for early voting only during the week.

Leadership Big Bend to host volunteer fair

Leadership Big Bend will be hosting the Big Bend Volunteer Fair in conjunction with a job fair for local high school students on Wednesday, May 13, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the University Center on the campus of Sul Ross State University. This volunteer fair is geared toward learning about the multiple non-profit groups across the tri-county area, and how anyone interested in the numerous causes can volunteer.

Amount of state in drought increases again Near the end of March, 89% of the state was in drought, according to hydrologist Dr. Mark Wentzel with the Texas Water Development Board.

BRI receives funding to advance habitat restoration

The Borderlands Research Institute (BRI) at Sul Ross State University has received a $975,000 gift from John L. Nau III to advance the next phase of habitat restoration at Nine Point Mesa Ranch, building on his original $1 million investment that launched the project.
