At the beginning of this week, I spent a couple of hours at the Brewster County Courthouse hearing from experts on the status of the New World Screwworm. Texas AgriLife Extension presented a webinar with the help of Brewster County Extension Agent Luke Hendryx.

The Big Bend Amateur Radio Club (BBARC) will hold its annual field day June 28-29 at the Double Diamond pavilion, eight miles south of Alpine on Hwy 118. As in years past, BBARC will participate in national amateur radio exercises from 1 p.m.

Free fitness classes will be held at the Marfa ISD weight room. Classes will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:45 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. through June and July. Classes began on Tuesday and are available to residents of Marfa ages 18 and older, both men and women.

After spring planting is complete, agricultural producers should make an appointment with the Farm Service Agency (FSA) to complete crop acreage reports before the applicable deadline. “Producers must file an accurate crop acreage report by the applicable deadline in order to receive many USDA program benefits,” said CED Carla Spencer, FSA’s County Executive Director for Brewster, Jeff Davis, and Presidio Counties.

Abbott has until June 22 to sign or veto bills Texas legislators wrapped up the 89th session last week, passing more than 1,200 bills — 800 of which were sent to Gov. Greg Abbott in the last 10 days of the session, The Dallas Morning News reported.
