Alpine currently has 12 city parks, but later this year one in particular will be getting a dramatic renovation. Pueblo Nuevo, which sits in the southeast corner of Alpine just east of Jackson Field, will be rebuilt from the ground up. Renovations are set to include a community pavilion, children’s play equipment, and a senior ADA-approved exercise section. A half-basketball court and walking paths are also in the plans. The project is a partnership through the City of Alpine and a Texas Parks & Wildlife grant originally submitted in November 2020.

On Sunday afternoon, the Fort Davis Volunteer Fire Department was called out to a grass fire on Hwy 118 north near the old Solar Park. At around 4 p.m. it was estimated to have burned about 70 acres and was moving swiftly towards the north-east. At the time, the subdivision of Limpia Crossing was not threatened, but FDVFD officials said it was a possibility if the winds shifted.

A quick response from Big Bend National Park fire personnel halted a small wildfire caused by winddowned power lines in the Chisos Mountains. At approximately 3 p.m.

The Brewster County Tourism Council met last month in regards to several items affecting and possibly enhancing tourism within the county. Top on their agenda were occupancy updates for the upcoming Spring Break holiday, possible intern position in collaboration with Sul Ross, and a Texas Hotel Lodging Association high school tourism camp.

The City of Alpine recently released it’s preliminary sketch for the proposed remodeling of the Chamber of Comm erce building. Members of the Sul Ross Clip and Brand Club recently competed in the Rambouillet sheep judging contest held at the Miles Pierce Altuda Ranch.

Dear Neil: I can’t get rid of clover in my lawn. I’ve tried a 7 percent 2,4-D product, but it didn’t work. I’m thinking about using a stronger 2,4-D product but I don’t want to injure my lawn. What can I do?

As I am writing this, the gusts are howling outside. Branches are scraping the windows and the windmill in our yard is spinning furiously. And now we’re entering the month of March, traditionally regarded as the windiest month.
