Lady Bucks end district season at home

The Alpine Lady Bucks took on the Lady Coyotes last Tuesday in Tornillo. The Lady Bucks started out slow but progressively picked up the energy throughout the game. The girls would play a close first quarter leading the Lady Coyotes 12-9.

Great things are happening in Alpine thanks to a lot of hard-working, dedicated individuals coming together. It was recently announced that there will be a new 50-spot daycare opening this summer in Alpine.

An idea: We are all from Valentine

Out in the West Texas town of Valentine, now population 78 per the recent Census, I fell in love with an idea. As Valentine’s Day approaches, our little pueblito takes the opportunity to shine as folks seek out the cancellation stamp designed by one of our students.

Senaida R. Wright, 72, beloved mother and grandmother, passed away Dec. 31, 2022, in Odessa. She lived in Alpine all her life. Her hobbies were walking, gardening, talking to people and most of all being of help to people. Most of all talking to people and helping. She was a very caring and loving person. We will miss her dearly. She will always remain in our heart forever. She is preceded in death by her mother, Lucia Rojo, father Eloy Wright Sr., brother Eloy Wright Jr., and sister Delma Hinojos. Senaida is survived by one brother Raul Rojo and two sisters Josie Muniz and Linda Kay as well as one daughter Irene Olivas. She is also survived by six grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Church services will be held Feb. 11, at 2 p.m. at Calvary Apostolic Church, 45980 State Hwy 118 in Alpine.

Vernon “Mac” McIntyre Morrow

Vernon “Mac” McIntyre Morrow, of Alpine, passed away peacefully and painlessly on Jan. 16. Mac was born on March 23, 1949, in Alpine, and spent most of his life living and working in Brewster County. He was preceded in death by his parents Keith and Janette Morrow, his eldest son Michael McGregor Morrow, and youngest son William Wetzel Morrow. Mac is survived by his sister Jan Skaggs, brother William “Mo” Morrow, children Benjamin Morrow, Katie Henson, Shannon Morrow, Chisum Morrow, and Philip Morrow. Mac also had had two nephews, two nieces, sixteen grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren at the time of his death.

Billy Gene Roberts, 82, better known to everyone as Ike Roberts from Marathon, entered eternal rest on Jan. 29. Ike was born November 26, 1940, in Alpine to Travis and Polly Roberts. He was raised in Marathon and grew up working on the family ranch and the Catto-Gage Ranch. He attended Sul Ross State University and graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration.

Local winners announced in youth poetry contest

The 2023 Lone Star Cowboy Poetry Gathering Youth Poetry Contest garnered 110 entries in five levels. Contestants included students from Alpine Christian School, Alpine ISD, Fort Davis ISD, Valentine ISD, Marathon ISD, Balmorhea ISD, Austin ISD, Uvalde Classical Academy, and Columbia Elementary School in Louisiana, along with several home schools in West Texas, Central Texas, Ohio, and Alaska. Levels were broken down as follows. Level one is Kinder 5 through Second grade, Level two is grades three and four, Level three is grades five through six, Level four is grades seven through eight, and Level five is grades nine through 12.
