A snow day in Alpine

Body
The Brewster County Courthouse was blanketed with snow and ice on Feb. 3 as a winter storm gripped the area. Icy roads and single-digit temperatures forced school closings, and many businesses were closed as well. No long-term power outages were reported, and sunshine and slightly milder temperatures over the next couple of days brought the area back to normal. Avalanche photo by Gail Diane Yovanovich

Chinati launches apprenticeship program

In March an apprenticeship designed to recruit women in the region for job training in adobe restoration will begin at the Chinati Foundation. Participants from the Tri-County will spend six weeks learning about earthen construction through a combination of workshop sessions and hands-on training. In the process, apprentices will help restore Donald Judd’s distinctive adobe-walled courtyards as part of Chinati’s major restoration of the John Chamberlain Building in downtown Marfa.

The other bean dip

Body
There are sure to be people out there who do not know what I mean when I say the other bean dip. Well, I am talking about hummus. One might think that hummus has nothing to do with beans, but it is in fact made from garbanzo beans. Yes, that oddly shaped, tan colored bean you find in a can on your grocer’s shelf is, when processed, hummus.
