West Texas Safari Club donates to scholarship endowment

The West Texas Chapter of Safari Club International has made a $5,000 donation to support an endowed scholarship at the Borderlands Research Institute at Sul Ross State University. The endowment was set up by the West Texas chapter in 2014, and has been supporting students ever since.

It was an exciting opening day on Jan. 29 for Little Dribblers basketball in Alpine as the first and second graders representing the Pistons get ready to battle the Spurs at the Alpine Elementary School gym. There were plenty of parents, family, and fans cheering in the stands as they dribbled their way to the win column. Alpine Humane Society Pet of the Week is Ida. She would enjoy a patient, loving household, and would benefit from extra love and attention so she can settle into a happy life. She appreciates relaxed living, and likes being indoors but is not against enjoying an afternoon under the shade on a cool patio.

Sunshine House is looking for volunteers

The Sunshine House is looking for volunteers to do Meals on Wheels deliveries. It takes about an hour, from 10:30-11:30 a.m., and there are eight to 10 people who receive meals on each route. Map and route information will be provided.

Sul Ross gets state money

The Texas State University System has received more than $60 million in state support for Sul Ross State University, including an historic investment of more than $59 million for capital projects in the university’s two service regions. The funding, secured by TSUS leadership during the 2021 legislative sessions, includes $33.1 million for multi-purpose education buildings in the Rio Grande College service area, $26.4 million toward renovations of fine arts buildings in Alpine, and $1 million in recurring state general revenue support to enhance the university’s student success initiatives.
