Plans for a new brewery generated discussion at the City of Alpine regularly scheduled city council meeting on Oct. 19.

It is the beginning of cool fall weather in the Big Bend, and with it comes the start of unique family traditions designed to honor departed loved ones. For the Holy Angels Cemetery Association in Alpine, it all starts with beautifying and sprucing up the place of rest.

As I pick up large June bugs, stranded on their backs in the McCoy’s parking lot, it seems almost inconsequential or a waste of time to do so. I’m not sure what they did to put themselves in such a position, but I do know they will surely die like that. By design they seem to be destined for such an end. It doesn’t make sense. After so much evolutionary time, one would think that such fatal flaws would have been weeded out by natural selection. Yet, here they are.

Sul Ross State University men’s and women’s soccer teams, in conjunction with the Big Bend Youth Soccer Association, will host weekly skills clinics on Sundays for the local soccer community. The clinics are led by head men’s soccer coach Jon Evan, head women’s soccer coach John Dominguez, and graduate assistant Lorenzo Segura.

Alpine resident Joel Nelson will be the third recipient of the Ranching Heritage Association Working Cowboy Award during the 43rd Annual National Golden Spur Award dinner on Oct. 16 at the Overton Hotel in Lubbock.

On Oct. 8 Sul Ross State University President Pete Gallego and other university officials dedicated the mural “Living the Dream - Cultural Pride on Campus” at the Gallego Center. The mural depicts historical images of Texans of Hispanic descent, and was intended to inspire the community and student to believe in themselves and make a difference. Engines will roar and adrenaline will be pumping through some of the best racers in West Texas come Saturday morning in Fort Stockton. The Big Bend Open Road Race 2.0 will take place on Oct.

Illegal immigration and the border crisis were the focal point of discussion at the City of Alpine regular council meeting on Oct. 12. Interim City Manager Megan Antrim and Police Chief Darrell Losoya provided updates on border security. Council, Ward 4, Martin Sandate was absent.

Tom Strong, Alpine: I enjoy Halloween. But traditionally, I have not been much of a Halloween decorator, although I enjoy getting into some sort of costume to entertain the kids that come door-to-door, and even some of the adults as well.
