City discusses EMS, gas rates

The City of Alpine held its regularly scheduled city council meeting on April 5, and a proposed EMS contract update and a controversial gas rate were some of the issues discussed. Regarding emergency medical services, City Attorney Rod Ponton said he will be sending out a proposed draft of the contract between the city and El Paso-based Emergent Air as the new emergency medical services provider.

Trail Life Troop goes extra mile

Scouts of Trail Life Troop TX 0040 from Holy Cross Anglican Church of Alpine are excited to show off their newly acquired Adopt-a-Highway sign just east of town on U.S. Highway 90. The troops dedicated their time on April 2 to pick up roadside litter as part of TxDOT’s Keeping Texas Beautiful initiative, which allows volunteers to adopt stretches of state-maintained roadways to conduct litter pickups. The troop received safety training, along with safety vests and litter bags.

Whether serious rockhounds, amateur geologists, or casual rock collectors who love to pick up pretty stones, there is something for everyone at the 31st Annual Chihuahuan Desert Gem and Mineral Show, coming up Friday through Sunday, April 15-17, at the Alpine Civic Center.

I watched my first television program, “The Lone Ranger,” in the early 1950s. I instantly became a fan of that hero, and shortly after that I added to my list of heroes Roy Rogers, Dale Evans, Gene Autry, and other characters with white horses and white hats.

Driver arrested for human smuggling

On March 27 a Brewster County deputy observed a Chevrolet Tahoe traveling northbound pull into the southbound lane to circumvent the U.S. Highway 385 Border Patrol checkpoint. The deputy attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but the vehicle fled north for several miles before coming to a stop.
