Texas public schools are relentlessly accountable to the state and their communities, but the state is rarely accountable back to its schools. This power imbalance curtails schools’ ability to actualize their community’s vision for their children, particularly in rural Texas.

Traditions are hallmarks of most holidays, but they’re particularly prominent during celebrations that fall at the end of the year. The customs people hold dear are among the many factors that set the holiday season apart. It’s why we eat turkey when giving thanks or kiss under the mistletoe.

As November arrives and with Thanksgiving on the horizon, we’re reminded of the importance of slowing down, counting our blessings, and giving thanks. In our schools and throughout our community, there is so much to be grateful for.
