It was an exciting opening day of Bible-based games and fun activities for Alpine kids at the Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church Team Jesus bible camp held at the Parish Hall on July 25. The week-long camp for preschoolers through sixth grade will run until July 29. In the photo, children from first and second grades pause for a photo. School supply drive

The St. Vincent de Paul Society of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Alpine, 406 South Sixth Street, is collecting school supplies to help children in need. Supplies can be brought to the church office and placed in the plastic tote at the entrance.

AISD examines school safety and security

Alpine ISD Board of Trustees held its regularly scheduled meeting on July 20, and updates on safety and security, including increased law enforcement presence on campuses and options allowing district personnel to carry firearms were in the forefront.

County deficit on the horizon

Brewster County Commissioners Court held its regularly scheduled meeting on July 26, and news of a proposed budget deficit of $400,000 for fiscal year 2023, along with continuing discussions on ways for the county to legally collect unpaid hotel occupancy taxes were at the forefront.

CDRI reaches new heights with fundraiser

The nonprofit Chihuahuan Desert Research Institute sits in the foothills of the Davis Mountains at 5,100 feet elevation just before reaching Fort Davis. The institute provides year-round geological and biological exhibits for everyone from youngsters to advanced researchers, as well as desert botanical gardens, and a visitor center with plenty of information for the nature seeking enthusiast.

One morning as I was walking along Fifth Street, a guy in a truck honked, put his hand out the window, and made an obscene gesture. Whether directed toward me or not, that incident saddened me.

A total of 99 student-athletes at Sul Ross State University have been recognized as Academic All-Conference by the American Southwest Conference for the 2021-2022 school year. Students were recognized in every conference athletic event in which Sul Ross participates.
