WEEK Alpine Humane Society Pet of the Week is Katie, a heeler mix who is six-and-a-half years old. She came to the shelter with her “sister friend” Athena. She walks nicely on a leash, and is doing well in playgroups. Katie is affectionate and listens well. She weighs in at about 43 pounds, and will make a sweet little addition to your family.

Funding applications available for West Texas landowners

The Borderlands Research Institute is now accepting applications for its Greater Big Bend Conservation Partnership program. This is a cost share program that will reimburse approximately 50% of the overall cost of qualified conservation practices to selected landowners in Brewster, Jeff Davis and Presidio counties. The application period will be open from Oct. 24-Dec. 16, and applications are available online.

Historically Día de los Muertos is a Mexican holiday with a blend of Mesoamerican ritual, Spanish culture, and European religion. Pre-Columbian Mesoamerican rituals date back some 3,000 years where civilizations like the Aztecs honored their dead with offerings of food, drink, and even tools for their journey through the Land of the Dead. These rituals inspired the traditions and practices held today.
