Sul Ross State University will host its’ sixth Annual Undergraduate and Graduate Research Symposium. This event will be held April 17-18, and be in person as well as virtual.

Just 43 days before the general election, incumbent city council member for Ward 5, Jerry Johnson passed away. Johnson, a prominent citizen of Alpine, business owner, and former Mayor of Alpine was set to face former councilman Rick Stevens on the May 6 ballot. Many residents may remember Stevens being highly vocal when he served on the Alpine City Council prior to the election of Johnson.

On March 11 at 11:10 p.m., Jose Alfredo Aguilar-Esteban was arrested in Presidio on charges of aggravated sexual assault of a child. Presidio Police Department Officer Jose Lara made the arrest at the home of victim. Officer Lara’s arrest report indicated that Aguilar-Esteban smelled of alcohol at the time of his arrest. The subject was booked into the Presidio County Jail on March 12 at 1:12 a.m. where he remains in custody on a $150,00 bond. According to reports, the crime was said to have occurred shortly before the suspect was arrested at approximately 8:23 p.m. on March 11. No other information was available at this time.

WEEK Alpine Humane Society’s Pet of the Week is Yuri. Yuri is an adorable and shy kitten, about six months old. She loves to be held and cuddled. She enjoys chasing a feather wand as well as playing with toy mice. She also enjoys naps on your lap and will purr you into oblivion.

Dear Neil: My eastern redbud, albeit, leaning, seems to be healthy and has bloomed for several years. I noticed this spring that it has an area that is moist and weeping on its trunk. Should I be concerned enough to seek a diagnosis and treatment?

In what activities did you participate in high school? I was a member of the marching band, so I spent a lot of time at football games. I am also in solo and ensemble in band and I will be playing tennis soon.
