WEEK Alpine Humane Society Pet of the Week is Rex. Hello, I’m Rex. I have a whole heap of get-up-and-go and I’m not short on affection either. Don’t be intimidated by my bark I know it’s quite loud but it’s just to make sure that you will be looking my way. Runs or walks…well who am I kidding? It’s going to be a run. I love, love, love it all. I also enjoy a good tub of water on a nice hot summer day. So, let’s go and adventure and hike with stops by the river for a dip.

The Brewster County Commissioner’s Court held its regularly scheduled meeting July 7, at 9:30 a.m. In this Tuesday meeting, several notable items were discussed, such as future budget items coming up for update and renewal, the Sunshine House shared the efforts they’ve made in the community, and the possible historical preservation and caretaking of the courthouse lawn was discussed.

This year, the Borderlands Research Institute, located at Sul Ross State University, culminates its 15-year anniversary of conservation biology and land stewardship in the Trans-Pecos and Chihuhuan desert region of West Texas and northern Mexico, as well as areas in the Texas panhandle, New Mexico, and southeast Arizona.

The Alpine City Council held a special meeting July 11, to make up for the July 4th holiday break last week. The reports on the agenda were given by Mayor Catherine Eaves and City Manager Megan Antrim.

The I-20 Wildlife Preserve will enlarge its outdoor classroom in an entirely new way this summer when they welcome high school students into its new Conservation Job Corps program Monday morning. The program blends life skills lessons, such as learning to use tools, with classroom instruction, and hands-on exploration and observation.
