Far West Texas landowner seminar to take place in April

A seminar for West Texas landowners will be conducted on Saturday, April 13 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the conference room at Big Bend Telephone. This seminar is being offered by Texas A&M AgriLife Extension and lunch will be provided by Capital Farm Credit.

Locals arrested for possession of fentanyl, meth

Alpine locals Willie Ben Lara, III, Michael Espinosa, and Emily Medley of Fort Davis were recently arrested and taken into custody in Hudspeth County with approximately 8,500 potentially lethal doses of fentanyl along with methamphetamine that was destined for Alpine according to the Alpine Police Department. The three were taken into custody through the collaborative efforts and investigations initiated by the Alpine Police Department, Brewster County Sheriff’s Office, Texas Department of Public S a f e t y , Homeland Security Investigations, and the Drug Enforcement

Students win big at Big Bend History Fair

Each year, Sul Ross State University hosts the Big Bend Regional History Fair on its campus. Area students from Fort Davis, Marathon, Marfa, Valentine, and Alpine compete in both the junior and senior-level events.

AHS ‘Spies’ produce podcast

Coach Cory Cason, and Renee Parson, both history teachers at Alpine High School embarked on a journey last summer thanks to a grant from the Fund For Teachers, following in the footsteps of worldchanging female spies. The Fund For Teachers Podcast features both of these educators, relaying their journey on researching and learning about the likes of Virginia Hall, Noor Inayat Khan, and Josephine Baker and their roles as spies in Europe.

Anyone familiar with the Davis Mountains knows that the prominent peak that is seen from almost any direction is Mount Livermore, the second-highest point in Texas. While researching William Livermore and his survey of the Davis Mountains and the mountain named after him, I remembered that the first European to visit the area was Antonio de Espejo. Espejo was here three hundred years before Livermore.

The late Judy Magers, better known to most as the “Burro Lady” spent her days traveling the Big Bend area and beyond atop her burro Merle. Camping out in bar ditches, and coming into town only, when necessary, Magers was a familiar sight to those of us in this area. Now gone on to her great reward some 17 years past this January, Fort Stockton’s George Delgado has taken up the reins to honor Magers, so that she is not forgotten, in a 260-plus-mile trek aboard his trusty burro “Rojo”.

Kimball, Gonzales win primary in Brewster County

The polls closed for the March 5 primary election at 7 p.m. on Tuesday night. Voters and candidates alike anxiously awaited the results to determine who will show up on the ballot for the general election in November. Out of 7,162 registered voters in Brewster County, only 1,969 voters cast their ballots. Ballots cast on the Republican ticket totaled 1,297 for this primary while a total of 690 cast votes on the Democratic ticket. Voter turnout for this primary election was calculated at 27.49% of the registered voters in Brewster County.
