BBARC holds annual field day

Body
Starting midday Saturday, June 27, 2026, and running through midday Sunday, June 28, is the American Radio Relay League’s (ARRL) Field Day event. Each June, more than 31,000 hams throughout North America set up temporary transmitting stations in public places to demonstrate ham radio’s science, skill, and service to our communities and nation. It combines public service, emergency preparedness, community outreach, and technical skills all in a single event. Field Day has been an annual event since 1933 and remains the most popular ham radio event. As we have done since the early 1970s, the Big Bend Amateur Radio Club will participate in this year’s Field Day and will operate from the Double Diamond Pavilion located south of Alpine, on Highway 118. You can’t miss us -- just look for the radio antennas on the south side of the highway at the old Double Diamond Store. We invite and encourage you to visit and see some of the activities ham radio operators engage in during emergencies and to practice their skills.

Material wealth and spiritual poverty

Body
A few years ago in our parish, we read a book by Eric Metaxas titled 7 Men (Metaxas later followed up with 7 Women and 7 More Men—apparently the market for such books is quite strong). In 7 Men, Metaxas surveys seven great men— George Washington, William Wilberforce, Eric Liddell, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Jackie Robinson, Pope John Paul II, and Chuck Colson—and distills from their lives key traits of leadership and character. I would recommend the book as a decent piece of Christian biography.
