A stunning variety of photography awaits visitors at the Jeff Davis County Library, which is hosting a traveling exhibit, Mexican Fiestas, on display from November 3 through December 12. Created by Humanities Texas in collaboration with Houston photographer Geoff Winningham, the exhibit is a series of vivid photos showcasing Mexico’s rich and diverse cultural heritage. The images span many decades of Winningham’s work, which documents a wide array of festive traditions in villages throughout Mexico to celebrate community, traditions, art, and dance. The exhibit is free and may be seen during regular library hours: Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Wednesdays from noon to 6 p.m.; and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The library will be closed on Tuesday, November 11, in observance of Veterans Day. Across every corner of Texas, from the rim of Palo Duro Canyon to the pine forests along the Angelina River, more than 314,000 acres of working lands are now permanently conserved through the Texas Agricultural Land Trust (TALT).

Voters approve all 17 proposed amendments Texas voters approved all 17 constitutional amendments on the ballot last week, the Houston Chronicle reported. Those included measures to raise the homestead exemption and reduce property taxes for businesses, and to provide $1 billion annually for a statewide water fund.

Each year, Hillside Baptist Church in Alpine receives boxes for Operation Christmas Child, a project of Samaritan’s Purse. This organization, led by Franklin Graham, responds to the physical and spiritual needs of people in crisis worldwide and works in over 110 countries to provide aid to victims of war, disease, disaster, poverty, famine, and persecution.

In last week’s lead story, information received from a board member of the Big Bend Regional Hospital District was incorrect on the number of health clinics in Presidio. Lynette Brehm, Executive Director, informed the Avalanche that currently, PCHS and Bravo Health have the only two open and functioning clinics in the City of Presidio, and that once the new health clinic building is complete, Bravo Health would become a tenant of that building.

The Union Pacific Railroad bridge on the west side of Alpine, which continues to be struck by over height semi-trucks, is scheduled to be upgraded from its current 13’7” to 14’3”— according to information received from Brewster County Judge Greg Henington. Alpine’s TxDOT Supervisor, Anthony Marquez, advised him of the upgrades.

The American Land Title Association (ALTA) Good Deeds Foundation, a registered 501(c) (3) charitable organization founded by ALTA, the national trade association of the land title insurance industry, today announced they have awarded $5,000 to Smoke in the Mountains BBQ & Ribeye Shootout in Fort Davis.
