As a birder, one of the perks of living in the Big Bend is the ability to easily observe certain species that birders from elsewhere must travel great distances to see. That statement is true, of course, for all of North America since each region has its birding specialties and hotspots.

Dear Neil: I planted red yuccas last year, and they bloomed beautifully. Last winter when I started to prune the old bloom stalks, they were so brittle that I just pulled them out. This year I had no blooms. Will they bloom next year, or do I need to plant new plants?

What is orzo? Orzo is an Italian pasta which name means “barley” because it resembles barley in its unprocessed form. It is classified in the pastas as being a pastina, and used mainly in soups. While orzo is Italian in origin, it is a staple across Europe, primarily Greece and the Middle East. It is known by different names in different regions, such as kritharaki, manestra, rosa marina, einkornpasta, or pasta gallo pion. Orzo is also known as risoni.

There is a concept in physics known as the Heisenberg, or Uncertainty, Principle. This idea was conceived by the German physicist Werner Heisenberg who won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1927. In the simple terms I understand, this principle states that in quantum mechanics, it is impossible to determine two related quantities at the same time. One can measure the position of a particle but not the direction, or one can measure the energy but not the position.

What activities were you involved in during your senior year? I did band marching in UIL competition. What was your favorite moment the last four years? My favorite moment in the last four years in high school was being able to go on so many trips with the band and sports, and being able to meet so many new people.

Kylie King, Kody Gentry, Jesus Rey, and Debbie Jordan of BBT in Alpine are happy to serve up barbecue with all the fixings during the annual BBT barbecue and tailgate party held on Murphy Street on July 29. BBT hosted an appreciation party for customers, employees, Viva Big Bend musicians, and future BBT customers. The City of Alpine held its regularly scheduled city council meeting on Aug. 2, and Mayor Catherine Eaves said most of the topics of discussion at her Meet with the Mayor events have concerned the city budget and roads.

When it comes to advancing educational goals for the 21st century at Marfa ISD, along with ensuring security and safety for students, the district is at the forefront, and hoping to make a proposed bond project happen.
