Tourism Council OKs $1.8 million budget

The Brewster County Tourism Council held their regular quarterly meeting on Monday, August 5 at 1 p.m. in the Val Clark Beard Office Complex. Council member Carol Peterson was absent, while council member John Price of Lajitas Golf Resort joined the meeting via Zoom and board member Barbara Trammell of Study Butte joined via phone. Visitors included Montie Mudd, Chris Tschacher, and Pct. 2 Commissioner Sara Colando.

The three-day Marathon Songwriters Festival is set to kick off once again August 8-10 in Marathon at the Gage Hotel and its properties. This event is the creation of Drew Kennedy who heads up the songwriting talent, bringing “a celebration of song and story in Far West Texas.”

Fire destroys striping truck

Last Thursday evening around 5:30 p.m., multiple agencies, including the Alpine Police Department, the Brewster County Sheriff’s Office, and the Alpine Volunteer Fire Department, were called to the scene of a vehicle fire on West Highway 90 around the intersection of FM 1703. According to information from the Alpine Police Department, the driver of the highway striping truck had pulled over due to a high heat alarm. When the driver disembarked from the vehicle, he noticed flames near the rear of the truck.

TxDOT plans construction for State Highway 118

The Texas Department of Transportation has issued an alert for traffic traveling on SH 118 from the Jeff Davis County line to the north side of Avenue E in downtown Alpine. Construction crews will begin a surfacing and roadway rehabilitation program scheduled to begin on Monday, August 5.

Cancer nonprofit to host Survivor and Scoops celebration

Midland nonprofit, Permian Basin Gifts of Hope has decided to host a day for all cancer survivors to celebrate their journeys and has partnered with local Alpine business Scoops Coffee & Pastries to host a celebration event for cancer fighters, survivors, and their families.
