Last month we celebrated Mother’s Day, and this month we will celebrate Father’s Day. Most of us first experienced love in the arms of our mothers and fathers. The effect of a parent’s love on the growing child cannot be overestimated.

After suffering a firstround playoff exit in 2021, the Alpine o6 Cowboys are set to return to Pecos League play with a rejuvenated squad that seeks to win it all. The Cowboys will bring back the majority of their roster from last summer, including RBI leader Bryce Donovan, batting average champ Calvin Graves, and surehanded third baseman James Prockish.

Big Bend Regional Hospital District was recently awarded a $5.5 million dollar Emergency Rural Health Care grant from the USDA to increase access to health care in the City of Presidio and Terlingua communities. The goal is to advance solutions and support the longterm sustainability of rural health care. It is anticipated that only 15 grants will be awarded nationwide.

On April 29, 2022, Charles Young, the third African American to graduate from West Point, was posthumously promoted to Brigadier-General in the U.S. Army, dating to 1922. This made him the first African American to achieve that rank. It was not until 1940 that another black officer, Benjamin Davis, Sr., achieved that rank.

Marathon Chamber of Commerce met for its quarterly meeting May 18 on the patio of the French Company Grocer in Marathon. New board members were welcomed - Melee Hernandez as incoming treasurer and Shawna Graves as interim secretary, along with new social media coordinator Stephanie Winston.
