The Borderlands Research Institute, housed at Sul Ross State University, hosted students from the Autonomous University of Chihuahua, a Mexican public university located in Chihuahua City, Chihuahua, Mexico. The most famous cattle breed developed in Texas was the Santa Gertrudis bred by the King Ranch in South Texas, but this was not the only breed. As the grasslands of the Davis Mountains and Big Bend were settled in the 1880s, ranching became the economic driver of the area.
