Earl Richard “Dick” Wallis passed away on Sept. 27, 2022, in El Paso, Texas. Graveside services were held on Oct. 1, 2022, at Elm Grove Cemetery in Alpine, Texas. Dick was born on Sept. 25, 1931, near Bosler, Wyo. He is the son of Lew Elmer Wallis and Esther Anna Drube Wallis. He graduated from Longmont High School in Longmont, Colo., and attended Colorado State University for a semester before joining the Navy in 1951. He served during the Korean War. He rode in the belly of the aircraft, and spotted submarine trails on the Atlantic Ocean. In 1954 he returned to Wyoming, and attended the University of Wyoming and was on the rodeo team. He was a National Intercollegiate Reserve Champion Bull Rider in 1957.

Marathon ISD chooses Lone Finalist

Dr. Ivonne Durant, current Interim Superintendent for Marathon ISD, and a former top Dallas ISD school administrator, is the lone finalist for the position of Superintendent for Marathon ISD. District trustees voted unanimously on the action in a special board meeting held on Sept 21.

For the Sul Ross State University women’s soccer team, success is much more than what is reflected in the scoreboard or in the stats. The players’ accomplishments serve as an inspiring example as they juggle school, multiple jobs, and tough practices every day to be able to compete against other top NCAA Division III teams.

Queso contest returning

Dia de los Quesos, a popular annual fundraiser sidelined for two years by the pandemic, is back. This come-and-go event benefiting Alpine Humane Society will be held on Sunday, Oct. 30, from 4-7 p.m. in the Hotel Ritchey courtyard at the corner of Murphy and Fifth streets.

WEEK Alpine Humane Society Pet of the Week is Robin, a two-year-old handsome male Shepherd mix. He has a sweet smile but this boy is a bundle of energy, and he needs someone to work on his manners with him. He’s a bit of a wild child, but has a ton of potential.
