What is orzo? Orzo is an Italian pasta which name means “barley” because it resembles barley in its unprocessed form. It is classified in the pastas as being a pastina, and used mainly in soups. While orzo is Italian in origin, it is a staple across Europe, primarily Greece and the Middle East. It is known by different names in different regions, such as kritharaki, manestra, rosa marina, einkornpasta, or pasta gallo pion. Orzo is also known as risoni.
