Auxiliary recognizes flag flyers

American Legion Auxiliary Unit 79 in Alpine recently began presenting certificates of recognition to local businesses showing their patriotism by flying the American flag and showing support for the country, U.S. military troops, and veterans. The businesses receiving the awards include Alpine Casparis Municipal Airport, Alpine Country Club, Alpine Public Library, Big Bend Regional Medical Center, Carpenter Real Estate, Hotel Parker, City Drug, Double K Flowers and Gifts, Hampton Inn, Highland Drug, Highland Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Holland Hotel, Maverick Inn, McDonalds, Morrison’s True Value, Mountain View Properties, Out West Feed and Supply, Quality Inn, Rio Grande Electric Co-op, Inc., Sugar Moon Air BNB, Sunshine House Senior Center, Tallent Roofing, Uncle’s on North Fifth Street, Uncle’s on U.S. Highway 90, and West Texas Realty.

Candidates set for May elections

The fields are now set for the May 7 City of Alpine, Alpine ISD, and Big Bend Regional Hospital District elections. For the city, school teacher Catherine Eaves and Alpine businessman Amit Rangra will face off in the mayoral race to take Andy Ramos’ seat when he terms out in May.

The City of Alpine held its regularly scheduled council meeting on March 1, and an announcement was made that two responses from private entities for EMS services had been received. Interim City Manager Megan Antrim provided an overview of the task force meetings that have been underway for the past two months with Brewster County, Big Bend Regional Hospital District, and Big Bend Regional Medical Center.

Busy spring break expected at national park

Spring in the Chihuahuan Desert has always lured many visitors to remote West Texas, especially during the months of March and April. Big Bend is already experiencing record visitation, and those who anticipate spending spring break in the park this year will need to plan ahead and be prepared.

Fort Davis museum reopening

The Old Overland Trail Museum reopened on March 3 at 511 Fort Street in Fort Davis. The museum will be open Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 2-4 p.m.
