“CBP’s February Monthly Operational Update reflects the continued economic rebound from the depths of the COVID pandemic, with CBP officers processing more than 2.8 million shipments in legitimate trade valued at more than $236 billion. February also registered a slight uptick in the number of encounters along the Southwest border, with most individuals arriving from Mexico and the Northern Triangle, and the majority of noncitizens expelled under Title 42,” said CBP Commissioner Chris Magnus.

New play to open at Sul Ross

This is the story of “The Cake,” a comedy by Bekah Brunstetter, presented by the Sul Ross Theatre Program, and opening Friday, March 25, in the Studio Theatre.

Energy development summit scheduled

The Borderlands Research Institute at Sul Ross State University invites those who are interested in how best to minimize the impacts of energy development on natural resources in Far West Texas to attend a summit on Healthy Lands and Energy Development scheduled in Midland on April 6.

Many people in southwest Texas celebrate lent. Lent is an observation of the 40 days (about one-and-a-half months) Christ fasted in the desert. It is observed by many church denominations, most prominently Roman Catholic. Beginning on Ash Wednesday each year, observers are called upon to give up luxuries, and abstain from eating meat on Fridays until Easter.

Ingredients: 1 package salmon filets 1/2 medium white or yellow onion 1 or 2 lemons Olive oil Olive oil Lemon pepper Lemon pepper Directions: Once they have thawed, place the filets in a glass baking pan such as Pyrex, and coat it with olive oil. Then sprinkle the filets with lemon pepper, and add the chopped onion and lemon slices to the top of the filets, and use the juice of half another lemon to squeeze onto the fish.

Emergent gets EMS nod

After many weeks of meetings and discussions, Brewster County commissioners and City of Alpine council members separately chose Emergent Air of El Paso as their 911 service provider. With an April 30 deadline looming, a contract still needs to be negotiated and set in place before service can begin.

Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church Knights of Columbus in Alpine held their annual Friday night Lenten fish fry on March 11 at the Parish Hall. Here Knights members Carlos Rodriguez, Bucho Garcia, Mark Padilla, Jeff Castillo, Joe Waggoner, and Eligio Rivas pause for a photo as they prepared delicious fried fish with all the fixings. Alpine baseball wins big in McCamey

Last Tuesday the Alpine Fightin’ Buck baseball team won 27-13 behind five runs batted in from James Morris against the McCamey Badgers. Said Coach Adam Llanez on Morris’ hitting in the game, “James hit the ball really well, and had an inside the park home run.
