Mary M. Pallanez 85, of Alpine, passed away on Thursday June 8, at her home after a short illness.

The undergraduate teacher preparation program was recognized by the National Council on Teacher Quality as among the best in the nation in preparing future elementary teachers to teach children to read, earning an A+ distinction in NCTQ’s new report, “Teacher Prep Review: Strengthening Elementary Reading Instruction.”

Alpine native and Sul Ross instructor Dr. Kendra DeHart has been named as the new chair of the Behavioral and Social Sciences department at Sul Ross State University.

Sul Ross State University is the birthplace of the college rodeo. It is where the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association began, and its history has helped pave the way for a cowboy from Idaho to help achieve his dreams.

The dog days of summer roll on for the Alpine Cowboys. Facing their toughest stretch of the Pecos League schedule, the Cowboys lost four of six to the Tucson Saguaros and four of five on the road to the Roswell Invaders.

Eleanor Margaret Hay Foster passed away on June 11, in Rio Communities, New Mexico where she had lived her last fourteen months with her daughter. She was born October 26, 1928 at Hiway, Roosevelt County, New Mexico to Anna Clyng Hay and Eugene Wells Hay. She was preceded in death by her loving husband William “Bill” Bennett Foster, Jr., and her brother George Hay of Hiway, New Mexico.

Albert Hartnett Rojo, Jr, “Conky”, entered eternal rest on February 8th, at the age of 71, at home in San Jose, CA. Albert was born on April 26, 1951, in Ysleta, and raised in Alpine.
