April Watley and the Lady Buck softball team begin District play against Tornillo on March 13.

The tennis team competed at Sul Ross State University on March 6, and the Fightin’ Buck baseball team played several games at a tournament in Levelland during another busy week for Bucks athletics.

For the fourth time in the last four years, Alpine High School is sending someone to the powerlifting state finals. Senior Aaliyah Fierro finished among the top two Division 3 lifters in her weight class at the regionals in Seagraves on March 6.

Weighing in at 111 pounds, Fierro lifted a combined total of 675 pounds, including a 270-pound dead lift. The second baseman on the Lady Buck softball team didn’t give powerlifting a try until this year, and has been pleasantly surprised by her totals. Now she'll have to miss one more softball game when she competes at the state finals in Waco on Friday, March 20.

The Lady Bucks will try to reclaim a District title when they begin playing District opponents on Friday, March 13 against Tornillo. Last year they finished second behind Kermit, with a 7-3 record ending a 10-year streak of District championships for Alpine.

The Ladies warmed up with several tournament games this past weekend. The games were moved to neighboring towns after the field in Big Springs was flooded following storms last week.
