Both Alpine High School basketball teams are slugging their way through District 3 road trips this week.
After losing four straight, the Lady Bucks took out their frustration in Anthony on Jan. 28. Everyone scored for Alpine in a 54-26 win. Chloe Cordova dominated the low post, and led all scorers with 18 points. Nora Carrasco scored 12, while Amory Aranda had nine in the blowout win.
The boys hoped to follow suit against the Wildcats, but instead found themselves in a battle all evening. Throughout the fourth quarter, the Bucks were within one or two possessions of taking the lead, but couldn’t get that magic shot to fall.
Alpine held Anthony to four points in the final four minutes, but trailed 57-51 with one minute to play. After an Aaron Fellows free throw cut the lead to five, a Bucks steal led to a Brady Crump basket and a foul. When Crump hit his foul shot, Alpine trailed by two with 38 seconds left.
The Wildcats traveled, and missed a free throw on their final two possessions but no more shots fell for the Bucks either, and they left the greater El Paso area with a 57-55 loss.
Another long bus ride to the far reaches of West Texas await both basketball teams on Friday, Jan. 31. Tornillo is the destination beginning at 6:30 p.m. for the girls.
