The Brewster County Commissioner’s Court held its first meeting of 2026 on Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. in the commissioner’s courtroom of the Brewster County Courthouse. Commissioner Pct. 3 Ruben Ortega was absent.

The Alpine High School Fightin’ Bucks boys’ varsity basketball team wrapped up the final, full tune-up week before district play with a split, taking a tough loss at home before turning around and putting on a clinic on the road.

The Alpine High School Lady Bucks varsity basketball team closed the door on non-district play this past week with two tightly contested games, showing determination and the Big Bend fighting spirit against Fort Stockton and Kermit as they turned their focus toward the start of district competition.

While winter often brings cooler temperatures to the Big Bend region, it also introduces a heightened risk of fires both inside homes and across the surrounding rangelands. Emergency Management is urging residents of Alpine and Brewster County to remain vigilant, as winter fire dangers are among the most common and destructive of the year.

I am writing to you to get some help. Maybe by crying out to the public, we can make Alpine safer.

The idyllic town of Fort Davis is known for its quiet, unassuming streets and neighborhoods. This all changed on New Year’s Day, with the tragic death of one of their young community members.

Hillside Baptist Church in Alpine invites the public to attend its new Wednesday night Bible Study video series, titled “The Promise of Heaven.” Written by wellknown Christian author Dr. David Jeremiah, The Promise of Heaven is a 12-week study containing topics such as: a body for Heaven, won’t Heaven be boring, Heavenly Worship, Five Crowns, the Celestial City, and more. This study will answer many questions often asked, such as what Heaven will look like, who will be there with us, what we’ll be doing throughout eternity, and what happens to babies and children who pass away. Dr. Jeremiah explains, “God has not left us in the dark regarding our eternal home. The Scriptures contain vivid pictures, solid promises, and detailed directions that assure us in this life of where we will spend the next.” Dr. Roger Hubbard, interim pastor at Hillside, will assist in navigating the study guide and the question-and-answer time.
