Death toll climbs in Hill Country flooding; Legislators will investigate response to crisis Gov. Greg Abbott said Sunday he’s likely to instruct the Texas Legislature to investigate early warning systems and other governmental responses to July 4 flash flooding that killed at least 82 people in the Hill Country.

Dear Neil, I can keep my grass green around these pecans, but we would have a huge water bill if I tried to keep the trees fully watered. I see dead/dry branches throughout our neighborhood. Should I let these pecans “self-prune” or get someone out to remove the dead wood?

To address the important doctrines found in the Bible, Dr. Roger Hubbard of Alpine will be teaching a 12-week course on Basic Bible Doctrine at Hillside Baptist Church. His dual teachings will begin during the morning worship service on Sunday, and he will also provide in-depth instruction on each doctrine on Wednesday nights, as well as offer a question-andanswer session.

This past weekend, Alan and his friends were visiting an establishment in Ojinaga, Mexico, just across the border, when he was tragically struck by random gunfire. He was innocently spending time in a town that many Presidio residents and tourists frequent. This senseless act leaves many unanswered questions about how and why this tragedy occurred.

“It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of God.” (Mark 10:25 ESV) Picture that for a moment: the image of a camel – a very large animal – trying to squeeze through the eye of a needle – a very small space. What is Jesus talking about? Is this not a wildly outlandish image? In fact, is this not … impossible? Because of Jesus’ shocking bluntness, various attempts have been made to soften the message.

Last Friday, we celebrated our Independence Day. A big part of holiday celebrations is always food, and Alpine was no different. Heather Yadon with Visit Alpine accepted entries for the first-ever Blue-Ribbon Cook-Off.
