GARDENER’S MAILBAG Dear Neil, I saw this Texas mountain laurel growing at a local business. It had these very unusual fan-shaped growths that appeared to be part of the plant. What is this? I’ve grown my mountain laurel for many years, and I’ve never seen this.

Early voting for the May 3 general election is just around the corner. Early voting begins Tuesday, April 22, and continues through Monday, April 28. The hours for early voting are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., weekdays only. No polls are open on Saturday or Sunday during early voting, and ballots may be cast at the Alpine Civic Center.

The Alpine Independent School District Board of Trustees held a special meeting on Wednesday, April 2, at noon to appoint two new principals to the district. Board president Eddie Natera was not present, vice-president Mary McCallister presided over the meeting. These appointments will fill the Alpine Elementary and Alpine High School positions.
