Fightin’ Buck baseball is off to a good start

The Alpine Fightin’ Buck baseball team will begin strong this season with six starting return players. Although they lost an equal number to graduation, Coach Adam Llanez believes his team will be contenders in district play. On top of the six returning players, four of last season’s JV players have moved up to varsity.

Lady Bucks conquer Senior Night

Last Tuesday, the Lady Bucks won their last district home game of the season against the Tornillo Coyotes. For this Senior Night, Alpine celebrated their graduating athletes, including Novah Carasco for her 1000-point record.

UIL realigns districts

Each October, the University Interscholastic League uses what they call a UIL Enrollment Snapshot. This is the day when high schools that are UIL members send their enrollment numbers to the UIL. The UIL then takes all of these enrollment numbers and determines the cutoff numbers for each district classification.

Early voting begins on the 20th

Early voting for the March 5 primary is set to begin on February 20 and continues until March 1. Locally, there are three contested races, two on the Republican ballot and one on the Democratic ballot.

McMullen sentenced to seven years in prison

Former Terlingua resident Harold Lee McMullen, 74, was sentenced to 87 months in prison for the possession of child sexual abuse material (CSAM) in an Alpine federal court. According to the United States Attorney’s Offi ce for the Western District of Texas, McMullen, who was arrested on August 15, 2023, and pleaded guilty on September 14, 2023, possessed more than 400 images depicting the sexual abuse of children.

Big Bend announces temporary closures

Big Bend National Park (BBNP) has announced two closures that will affect visitation to certain areas of the park this month. Beginning last Thursday, park officials announced the annual closing of select areas in the Chisos mountains to help protect nesting Peregrine falcons.
