A new way to use cast iron

Body
For those who have ever cooked in cast iron, you know nothing beats it. If you are like me, it is your go-to cookware option. If I want to make enchilada sauce, I grab my cast iron skillet. If I want to brown my meat for chile verde or asado, I use my cast iron chicken fryer. If it is pancakes or tortillas, it is my cast iron comal. There just is not any cookware out there that beats it.

PET OF THE WEEK

Body
Alpine Humane Society Pet of the Week is Euphrates, a 14-year-old blue-grey pit bull terrier mix, and he’s looking for a home to spend his retirement years. He’s an energetic, strong, and active senior dog who certainly does not act his age. Euphrates is super sweet, gentle, and walks well on a leash, which is perfect because he absolutely loves going on long walks. He’s an avid outdoorsman and would do best in a home with lots of outdoor space to exhaust some energy before curling up next to you.

Heard on the STREET

Body
Judy Perry, Alpine: Our church, First Presbyterian, is going to be handing out water for the parade. We will be out here on Fifth Street when the parade goes by. I like July 4th in Alpine - I always try to go to the park, particularly to the community band concert. My mom played in the community band here for about 20 years. Music was a big part of her life.

San Vicente students engage in outdoor classroom

Body
The outdoors is a kids’ playground in the summertime, which means they get to put on their explorer’s hat and discover Big Bend, all while boosting their learning curve in the process. That’s what San Vicente ISD set out to achieve during a two-week summer enrichment program held June 13-23. The program incorporated a combination outdoor laboratory, playground, educational facility, and tourist site all in one.
