Bettye Lynn McGehee, 71, gave her final solo performance on May 4, 2022, quietly in her home after a short illness. She joined Heaven’s Orchestra after 66 years of performances that started with a gifted violin at five years of age. Her mother’s gift, along with several decades of lessons, created a musical path for Bettye that included Houston’s Junior Symphony (tours of Great Britain, Mexico, and Europe), All State Symphony, a bachelor’s degree in Violin Performance from Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas, many years with the Houston Symphony and Houston Opera Company, and recording studio time with many artists including Andre’ Previn and Shaft. Brava Bettye!

Early voting for the May 24 Republican and Democratic primary runoffs begins Monday and ends next Friday as the major parties whittle down their Brewster County judge candidates for the Nov. 8 general election.

Brewster County Commissioners Court held its regularly scheduled meeting on May 10 and up for discussion as an information only item was a proposed designation to keep undeveloped lands at Big Bend National Park, about two-thirds of the park, as federal wilderness.

There is nothing like fun in the sun at an exciting local splash pad, ensuring that kids of all ages can cool off in the West Texas summer heat. This is where Alpine-based non-profit Big Bend Parks and Recreation for Kids comes in, enabling everyone - from toddlers to adults - to cool off at Kokernot Park.

All three of my children are grown, married, and have kids of their own. Parenting wasn’t easy and it wasn’t always fun, but raising our children was the most amazing long-term experience I’ve ever had. Raising them pushed my wife and I to our limits at times because of leading them to be godly, productive adults, and the problems that came along.

After clinching the second place spot in District 4 this season, the Alpine Lady Bucks faced off against the Littlefield Lady Cats in Big Spring for the Bi-District title. After a hard-fought game, the Lady Bucks fell at the hands of the Lady Cats by a final score of 14-2 in six innings.

This was the first year for junior high school golf in Alpine, and things look promising for the future. Six boys and six girls participated.

The Alpine High School golf teams completed their season this week at the regional tournament in Baird. On one of the toughest courses, they shot some of their best scores. No one will advance to the state tournament, but there were some great things that happened to build on for next year.
