Spring sports in full swing

Lady Buck second baseman Aaliyah Fierro qualified for the Regional Powerlifting Finals on Friday in Seagraves.

Spring sports are all in full swing now that the weather is warmer in Alpine, although Tuesday's rain cancelled baseball and tennis matchups on the calendar.

Powerlifting

Senior Aaliyah Fierro and junior Alex Natera qualified for the Regional Finals this month after finishing near or at the top of their weight class at every powerlifting meet in which they participated this year. Fierro will compete with the girls on Friday, March 6 in Seagraves, while Natera will travel to Sundown on Saturday, March 14 for the boys competition.

Girls Golf

Once again the girls are more experienced on the golf course than the boys in 2020. While some young Bucks are still sharpening their approach, the Lady Bucks team won one tournament in Marfa, and finished second in Andrews last month.

Frida Gallegos and Victoria Lancaster both medaled in those tournaments by finishing in the top three among individual players. Both the boys and the girls will next travel to Wink after spring break. District qualifiers are at the end of March, and the Regionals take place in April.

Track and Field

The first event of the track and field season took place in Fort Stockton on Feb. 29. Alpine was well represented at the Comanche Relays, and highlights included freshman Vanessa Rice medaling in each of her events. She finished first in the 100-meter dash and second in the 200.

Junior Kylie Penders picked up where she left off last year, won the 100-meter hurdles, and finished second in the 300. Aiden Morrissey finished second in the boys 110-meter hurdles. The girls 4x400 relay team improved upon their best time from last year by 13 seconds, and finished third.

Alpine’s next track meet is at Sanderson on Friday, March 6. They host the Fightin’ Bucks Relays at Bucks Stadium on Saturday, March 21.
