Elda Hernandez Leyva, 87, was born in Marfa, Texas, on March 16, 1931. Elda passed away peacefully at home on July 23, 2018. She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Augustine R. Leyva.

Elda is survived by her daughter Cynthia Leyva; son, Reymundo Leyva (Mary Kae); four grandchildren, Richard, Eileen Contreras (Federico), Tahlia Rae, and Elijah Rey; two great-grandchildren, Diego and Nadia Contreras; sisters Oralia Avila (Johnny), Linda Morton (Tom, deceased), Elisa Sands (Herb), and Sally Roblin (Dave); and brothers Eloy Hernandez (Sylvia), Martin Hernandez (Miriam), and Elfido Hernandez (deceased).

Elda attended Centennial School in Alpine, Texas. She was honored last summer as a Grand Marshal of the 2017 Fiesta del Barrio, recognizing Centennial exes, including Delma Hernandez Molinar, Lydia Gallego Leyva, and Irene Gallego Espinoza.

Elda was loved by her family and friends for her caring and supportive nature, and for her resilience in the face of obstacles. Elda took aerobics classes until the age of 86 at El Paso Parks and Recreation Carolina Center. When an exercise was too difficult, she danced her way through. Her dedication to fitness was an inspiration to the class led by Becky Becerra, as well as for her family and friends.

Elda’s favorite prayer was the Serenity Prayer:

God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,

Courage to change the things I can,

And wisdom to know the difference.

The family would like to thank Hospice of El Paso, especially Valeria Rodriguez CNA, for their kindness and generosity.

Services will be held for Elda and Augustine at Our Lady of Peace Church in Alpine on Saturday, Sept. 8, 2018, with Holy Rosary at 09:30 a.m., and Funeral Mass at 10 a.m.
