Kokernot Field to be featured in Star-Telegram

Posted: Thursday, June 5, 2003 12:00 am

Kokernot Field, labeled by one publication as "the best little ballpark in Texas," will be the subject of a Fort Worth Star-Telegram feature story later this month.

Star-Telegram senior writer Ray Buck visited Alpine May 29-31 to see the storied ball park, built in 1946 by the late Herbert L. Kokernot, Jr. He interviewed a host of Alpine residents, including Sul Ross State University Physical Plant director Jim Clouse; President R. Vic Morgan; former athletics director Dr. Chet Sample; Museum of the Big Bend director Larry Francell and curator Mary Bridges; Chris Lacy, Kokernot's grandson; Abel Hinojos, whose grandfather Pedro Del gadillo served as the field's first groundskeeper; and others.
