Small recycling bins availableBack to top

Want to recycle but don’t have a place to put that stuff? Alpine Recycles can help. Free home-sized recycling bins are available at the Hal Flanders Recycling Center on Cemetery Road. These bins offer a convenient way to sort, store and carry recyclables to the recycling center or any of the six mini-recycling units located throughout Alpine. Bins can be picked up from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturdays. There is a limited number of bins. Front Street reception is FridayBack to top

A reception/program is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 10, at Front Street Books for “Exploring Big Bend National Park,” a new tour guide by Kathy Adams Clark and Gary Clark. The public is welcome; complimentary refreshments will be served.


Case to speak in AlpineBack to top

Mark Case, the founder of Father’s Field Ministries in Brandon, Miss., will speak at 7 p.m. Friday, July 10, at the Best Western in Alpine. ‘Youth Uprising’ planned at UBCBack to top

University Baptist Church is sponsoring a “Youth Uprising” summer program for area youngsters. Events begin with a free meal at 6 p.m. Sunday, July 12, at the church fellowship hall, 1707 North 4th St. Youths in 7th through 12th grades will meet from 3-6 p.m. Monday, July 13, through July 17 at the church for food, music and games. DanceTahiti holding auditionsBack to top

DanceTahiti Contemporary Ballet Company is holding open auditions for girls and women ages 12 and older at 6 p.m. Monday, July 13, at La Trattoria Restaurant, 901 E. Holland.

Kareva Mulholland, director of DanceTahiti, says applicants don’t need to have experience, but they should have at least two evenings a week to dedicate to classes and rehearsals. All selected dancers will receive free training. Before the auditions, DanceTahiti will provide a demonstration and free workshop. The Alpine Public Library will offer computer classes from 6:15-8:15 p.m. Mondays on July 13, 20 and 27. The instructor will be Matt Packard. The Alpine Chamber of Commerce monthly mixer will be from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, July 14, at Talgar’s, 102 W. Murphy, across from the Amtrak station.


Free diabetes workshop plannedBack to top

A “Living Well With Diabetes” workshop is planned from 9 a.m. to noon July 19 at Kokernot Lodge on Loop Road. The Texas Department of State Health Services is sponsoring this free event. Topics will include foot care, healthy eating, physical activity, understanding lab results, preparing for emergencies and more. Seating is limited, and the department asks that attendees reserve a place by July 16 by calling Delia Martinez at 432-729-3185.


Hillside plans Youth ExtravaganzaBack to top

An area-wide Youth Extravaganza is planned for July 19 at Hillside Baptist Church. The event will take place in the evening at the Family Life Center directly behind the main building. There will be food, games, music and fellowship, all free. All activities are open to junior high and high school students in the area, regardless of church affiliation. ‘Faith Factor’ Bible school setBack to top

“Faith Factor: Nothing to Fear” is the theme of Our Lady of Peace’s summer Bible school for children ages 4 through fourth grade. The school will be from 9 a.m. until noon July 22-24; doors to the parish hall open at 8:30 a.m. Cost is $15 for the first child and $10 for each additional child in a family. The deadline to register is July 15 by visiting the church office or calling 432-837-3304.


Free rides available for workersBack to top

Big Bend Community Action Committee Inc. is offering free rides through July 17 to people in the Tri-County area who need transportation to job sites. The Job Access Reverse Commute is available Monday through Friday to people living in Alpine, Fort Davis, Marfa, Shafter and Presidio. To arrange for a ride or for more information, call these Community Action Committee offices: 432-837-2142 in Alpine, 432-729-1992 in Marfa or 432-229-4917 in Presidio.
