Mule deer numbers down in current drought, TPWD says

MIDLAND — The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department reported recently that mule deer populations are down about 40-45 percent across the Trans-Pecos region since 2009.

Each January and February, wildlife biologists fly helicopter surveys to estimate the mule deer population. During the surveys, biologists also tally the percentage of deer that are bucks, does and fawns
