Marfa honors “Giant” with artistic flair

Posted: Thursday, May 16, 2019 9:18 am

Marfa, widely known for its hip and trendy arts community, has something sure to attract the eye of locals and tourists alike.

Driving on U.S. Highway 90 to about five miles west of town, many have gazed at the huge, two-dimensional sculptures depicting the classic Hollywood film, “Giant,” that was partly filmed in Marfa. Thanks to California based artist John Cerney, the small West Texas town can now show off murals depicting some of the characters of the film. Cerney started out creating portrait and pencil drawings for actors, directors, and producers for the Los Angeles television industry, and then later decided that creating and displaying public art was becoming increasingly important to him. During the mid 90s, Cerney started designing cutout murals, something he does to this day.
