Council responds to hotel/motel tax funding requests

The Alpine City Council met Tuesday night to discuss last week’s proposals from various community organizations and events and their requests for hotel/motel tax funds. The council, which had $475,000 to dispense, mentioned several times that they would eventually like successful events to begin finding outside sponsors and other ways to fund themselves.

The following is a list of requestors, the amounts they requested and the amounts they were granted:

Tourism promotional plan $71,710/$71,710 (approved during the August 7 council meeting)

Alpine Tourism Center—$76,600/$70,275

Art Walk—$30,000/$30,000

Big Bend Cowboys—$25,000/$15,000

Balloon Bash—$10,000/$5,000

Big Bend Ranch Rodeo—$17,500/$15,000

Texas Mountain Trails—$4,100/$3,000

Cowboy Poetry—$15,000/$15,000

Blue Sky Publications—$3,366/$3,366

Marfa Magazine—$1,700/$0

Thundering Hooves—$14,000/$5,000

Theatre of the Big Bend—$25,000/$25,000

Gem and Mineral Show—$1,000 and use of the civic center

Kiwanis Fourth of July—$4,000/$4,000

Cinco de Mayo—$20,000/$10,000

Pioneer Day-Historic Alpine—$2,000/$2,000

Museum of the Big Bend—$23,931/$23,931

Viva Big Bend—$6,000/$6,000

Family Crisis Center—$2,000/$2,000 and use of the civic center

Taste of the Big Bend at Alpine—$10,000/$5,000

Big Bend Amateur Softball Association—$40,000/$40,000
