Building 98 resonates with history

Marfa is well known as a thriving art and history mecca, replete with imposing art installations that draw many creative types. There is also deep-rooted history that requires the meticulous narrative of an historian compelled to recount the stories of two German World War II prisoners who wound up in Marfa, though not by choice.

That historian is Mona Blocker Garcia, founder and executive director of the International Woman’s Foundation. Born and raised in Houston, Garcia has lived in Marfa for nearly 25 years, and calls herself an “international woman.” Her ancestry also has roots in television - famed Bonanza star Dan Blocker was her second cousin.
