Commissioners say the sheriff can get a dog

Avalanche staff

There’ll soon be a new double-duty deputy on the Brewster County Sheriff’s Office force.

Commissioners gave Sheriff Ronny Dodson the go-ahead on Monday to acquire a narcotics-sniffing and person-tracking dog from Worldwide Canine Inc. of Spring Branch.

Repurposed funds totaling $6,500 from a Lone Star Grant will be used to buy the dog, which Dodson said his office would share with the Border Patrol. Grant money also will be used for officer/handler training.

Worldwide Canine trains and sells primarily German shepherds, Labrador retrievers and Malinois breeds, but also has mixed-breed dogs used for narcotics detection, patrol, personal protection, explosives detection and human tracking.
